Accurate download tracking using the access log
How accurate is this method for counting the number of downloads?

Hi There,

I'm attempting to get the most accurate figure for the number of times a pdf has been downloaded on a client's site, and google analytics is of no use at the moment due the number of external sites at which the pdf link was posted.

So, I've come up with the most accurate figure I can find by counting the number of unique ip addresses from which the pdf was downloaded, using a combination of Apache Logs Viewer (to analyze the access log), and Microsoft Excel (to count the number of unique ip addresses in the resulting files).

So what I'm wondering is, do you think this is a relatively accurate method of counting downloads?

If not, any suggestions for improving the count would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
