simple question, say someone is browsing your website and clicks on a link taking you to a different website but in a separate tab or window. if your website remains open in the tab/window that's not active, will this time be taken into the visit duration metric in google analytics? or must the tab/window be active for it to count?

No, the activeness of the tab or window means nothing.
