recently we had awstats installed for one of our sites.
The results from Awstats vary heavily from Google Analytics

Google Analytics shows 12000 visitors per day while awstats shows only 7000 visitors per day

Is it possible to have such a large variation

Ask them for this definition: VISITORS
There are many variables what is this.

Hi, just do some searching; this is an ultra-common question that has been answered many times already. There are a lot of reasons for all the discrepancies. Do a search on log files versus javascript tagging. Almost every statistic will be affected.

And, besides that, the visitor stat will be completely different as said above, for the same reasons and other reasons. Look at the documentation for each program.

Google Analytics Help has a lot of text on this, do some searching for it. Also, search here in WebmasterWorld for similar discussions in the past, including ones about GA vs Awstats.

I tried to analyse with another log tool and the results vary

Only awstats shows a lesser number of visitors

Google analytic is much reliable than other tool...
Ya, you are right that traffic logs vary from tool to tool which you are using..

When i click the filters in IIS for the particular website, it shows" metadata not found" .Is it indirectly affecting the log stats in awstats
