Where have all the free submit engines gone to?

At one time there was a lot of good quality search engines. You could find them easily, go to the simple submit form and hey presto, a few days later you were in!

But now these great engines make it difficult by doing away with the simple submit boxes, adding rediculous fees for basic listings, or adding themselves to networks where paying to join their network is lengthy and costly.

Remember these guys: Looksmart, Altavista, Galaxy, Netscape, and DirectHit. I'm sure there were more good ones where the traffic was tasty... Am I going mad, or was there tons of major engines eg: 20 or so?

What happened to the good ole days when getting traffic was easy: boo, hiss.
