Every market is different, sites that I would approach would be very different to the ones you would approach. It pays to advertise on sites that are fairly closely related to your sites topic.

If you don't have any luck with that, you can always approach an ad network that has a lot of options regarding content channels and optimizations. Or do some directly yourself, and save the rest for someone else.
