"sponsored links" is generally OK too, but you should check the guidelines of the affiliate program(s)--they may have a preferred wording. As for what is "legally" OK that's going to vary by country, but generally if you aren't mispresenting anything you are fine.

Just be aware if you use PPC networks, because they rules about labeling use to be much more strict.

I assume you mean affiliate links/ads on your own website. Why label them at all? I have never heard anything about this being a legal issue and I have been a full time affiliate for over 5 years now. Am I missing something?

Each affiliate programs comes with its own terms of service where I have seen this covered in some and not in some. So the simple rule is to read them carefully and word it on a case by case basis.
