Screen readers

I asked another question about eyes, etc. earlier today and now I'm wondering this:

If you do not want to look at a monitor all day long, would it be possible to use a screen reader to have (new) forum posts (etc.) read out loud to you? I assume it works with e-mail and articles, but it'd probably only work for some tasks without being less productive (if its something difficult to understand Id rather read it!).

Would it work for some tasks (e-mail, forum posts) or would it make everything much slower and thus less productive (then its probably not worth it)? Dont know much about screen readers to be honest!

Ive been thinking of doing this & learning to type without even looking at the monitor. Actually I can probably do that already (the monitor is turned off right now ;)). just realized I can watch the keyboard the whole time lol (I always make sure to read what I finished writing again quickly, anyway). Guess that could spare me significant time that Im looking at the monitor (without it being of any use).

PS: The question is not whether Im overly paranoid/careful, but whether it works LOL ;).
